Description

This Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich combines savory oven-roasted turkey breast with sharp Havarti cheese and the crisp sweetness of thinly sliced apples, enhanced by tangy dill pickle mustard and a hint of fresh arugula tossed in lemon juice for a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The addition of dill pickle coins and crunchy dill pickle potato chips adds exciting layers of crispiness making this sandwich a delicious and satisfying meal option.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Cheese

  • 2 slices bread, preferably sourdough (Trader Joe’s recommended)
  • 2 slices Havarti cheese

Meat

  • 3 slices oven roasted turkey breast

Produce

  • 1 small apple, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup arugula
  • Fresh lemon juice, to taste (optional)

Condiments & Extras

  • 2 tablespoons Dill Pickle Mustard (Trader Joe’s recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon light mayonnaise
  • 6-8 dill pickle coins
  • 6-8 dill pickle potato chips (Trader Joe’s recommended)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bread and Cheese: Lay two slices of bread flat on a cutting board. Spread a thin layer of light mayo on one slice and arrange the Havarti cheese slices evenly on top, ensuring the cheese is sliced thinly to avoid it sticking to the roof of your mouth.
  2. Add Apple and Mustard: On the other slice of bread, spread the dill pickle mustard evenly. Top this with thinly sliced apples arranged in a single layer to maintain balance and texture.
  3. Layer Turkey and Pickles: Place the oven-roasted turkey breast slices over the apple layer, then add the dill pickle coins on top. For extra adhesion, optionally add a small squirt of mayo to act as sandwich glue.
  4. Prepare and Add Arugula: Toss the arugula with fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt and pepper to brighten its flavor. Spread this mixture evenly over the turkey and pickles.
  5. Add Crunch: Sprinkle the dill pickle potato chips over the arugula for a crunchy texture contrast.
  6. Assemble Sandwich: Take the slice of bread with mayo and cheese and carefully place it on top of the other slice, pressing gently to bind all layers. If potato chips are added, you may hear a satisfying crunch.
  7. Serve: Slice the sandwich in half diagonally for easy handling and enjoy immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • For best freshness, prepare and consume this sandwich on the same day. If making ahead for lunch, wrap tightly in plastic wrap and place in a sealed baggie.
  • This sandwich can also be grilled by buttering each slice of bread and cooking on medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese melts slightly.
