Dip Ingredients
- 2 medium sized onions, cut into thin rings
- 6 strips of thick bacon or 10 thin slices
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- 2/3 cup sour cream
- Dash of salt for the onions (minimal)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Place the thinly sliced onions in a skillet over low heat, sprinkle a small dash of salt, and cook slowly for about an hour until they turn a blonde or light brown color. Remove from heat and let them cool.
- Cook the Bacon: Lay the bacon strips on a foil-covered baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (204°C) for 20 minutes or until the bacon is dark brown and crispy. Allow the bacon to cool.
- Chop Ingredients: Once both the bacon and caramelized onions have cooled, place them in a food processor and pulse until thoroughly chopped but not pureed.
- Mix the Dip: Transfer the chopped bacon and onions to a medium-sized bowl. Add mayonnaise and sour cream, and mix thoroughly until well combined.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the dip for some time before serving. Serve cold with fresh vegetables and Wheat Thins for a perfect snack platter.
Notes
- Use low heat while caramelizing onions to avoid burning and ensure sweetness develops fully.
- Adjust bacon quantity depending on desired smokiness and taste.
- The dip can be prepared a day ahead to enhance flavors.
- Serve chilled for best texture and flavor.
- Pair with crunchy vegetables like carrot sticks, celery, and bell pepper strips along with Wheat Thins or crackers for variety.
