Description

The Onion-Wrapped Flying Dutchman is a creative twist on a classic double cheeseburger, substituting traditional buns with caramelized onion ‘buns’ that perfectly complement juicy double beef patties melted with American cheese. Enhanced with a tangy, sweet relish spread, this flavorful burger offers a rich and savory experience with a unique presentation.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Spread

  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 tablespoons pickle relish, drained
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard, optional

Patties

  • 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter, split in half
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Yellow mustard, for frying
  • 2 American cheese slices

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 large yellow onion, cut into circular slices
  • Salt, to taste
  • White sugar, to taste
  • Vegetable oil
  • 2 American cheese slices

Instructions

  1. Make the Spread: In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, pickle relish, ketchup, sugar, and white vinegar until the mixture turns a light pink. Set aside to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Prepare the Patties: Divide the ground beef into 8 portions of approximately 3 to 4 ounces each. Gently flatten each portion into a circular patty, being careful not to overwork the meat. Sprinkle both sides with salt and black pepper, then set aside while you prepare the onions.
  3. Make Caramelized Onion Buns: Heat vegetable oil in a large pan or flat grill over medium to medium-low heat. Add the onion slices in a single layer, sprinkle with salt and sugar, and cook them gently. Allow the edges to turn golden brown on one side before carefully flipping to caramelize the other side. Just before removing from heat, place a slice of American cheese on half of the onion slices so it melts slightly, creating flavorful onion ‘buns.’
  4. Cook and Assemble the Burger: Heat vegetable oil and half the butter in a skillet or pan over medium-high heat. Add the patties and optionally spread about a teaspoon of yellow mustard evenly on the raw side. Cook each patty for 2-3 minutes until a brown crust forms, then flip. Immediately place a slice of American cheese on half of the patties and continue cooking for about 1 minute to melt the cheese. Stack a non-cheese patty on top of a cheese-topped patty to form a double-decker burger. Transfer this patty stack onto a caramelized onion slice, then top with a cheese-topped caramelized onion slice to complete the onion-wrapped Flying Dutchman.

Notes

  • Be gentle when forming patties to keep them tender and juicy.
  • Cooking onions over medium-low heat allows for perfect caramelization without burning.
  • Using yellow mustard on the patties before searing adds a tangy flavor but is optional.
  • This recipe yields 2 substantial double-stack burgers.
  • For a gluten-free option, verify all condiments are gluten-free and omit any bread if used.
