Description

Jalapeno Popper Mummies are a fun and festive Halloween appetizer featuring spicy jalapenos stuffed with a creamy cheese mixture, wrapped in crescent roll dough to resemble spooky mummies. This easy-to-make recipe combines the heat of jalapenos with the softness of cheeses and a golden, flaky crescent roll crust, finished with cute candy eyeballs for a perfectly themed party treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Cheese Filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 8 oz Monterey Jack cheese (shredded)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Jalapenos and Dough

  • 10 jalapenos (sliced in half lengthwise, seeds removed)
  • 12 oz Pillsbury crescent rolls
  • 1 egg (lightly beaten with 1 Tbsp water, for egg wash)

Decoration

  • 40 small candy eyeballs (or sliced olives)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a large baking tray with aluminum foil and lightly spray it with olive oil cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Jalapenos: Slice the jalapenos lengthwise and carefully remove the seeds and most of the pith/ribs to reduce heat and create space for the filling.
  3. Make the Cheese Filling: In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until smooth and evenly combined.
  4. Stuff the Jalapenos: Spoon the prepared cheese mixture into each jalapeno half, filling them evenly but not overflowing.
  5. Prepare the Crescent Dough: Unroll the crescent roll dough. To form four rectangles, press together two triangles at their perforations for each rectangle. Then, slice each rectangle lengthwise into 10 thin strips for wrapping.
  6. Wrap the Jalapenos: Using two dough strips per jalapeno half, wrap them around the cheese-stuffed jalapenos like mummy bandages, leaving gaps where the eyes will go for a spooky effect.
  7. Arrange and Egg Wash: Place the wrapped jalapeno mummies on the prepared baking tray. Lightly brush the dough with the beaten egg wash for golden color and shine after baking.
  8. Bake: Bake the mummies in the preheated oven until the crescent dough is golden brown, about 12 minutes.
  9. Add Eyes: As soon as the mummies come out of the oven, carefully press two candy eyeballs onto each one in the unwrapped gaps to complete the spooky look.
  10. Cool and Serve: Allow the jalapeno popper mummies to cool slightly before serving warm as a festive appetizer.

Notes

  • Jalapeno popper mummies are a cute and spooky appetizer that also pack a flavorful punch with creamy cheese and spicy jalapenos.
  • This recipe is simple yet impressive, making it a perfect addition to any Halloween party spread.
  • To reduce heat, be sure to remove most of the jalapeno seeds and pith; wear gloves when handling jalapenos to avoid skin irritation.
  • If candy eyeballs are unavailable, sliced black olives make an excellent and edible alternative.
  • For a vegetarian option, ensure crescent roll dough contains no animal-derived ingredients.
