Ingredients
Scale
Base Ingredients
- 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into 1-Tbsp pieces
- 6 Tbsp all-purpose flour
Liquid and Seasonings
- 2 1/2 to 3 cups unsalted chicken stock
- 1 Tbsp chicken base
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Optional
- 3 Tbsp heavy cream
Instructions
- Melt Butter and Make Roux: Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and cook it while stirring constantly until it turns a light golden brown, about 3 minutes. This forms the roux which thickens the gravy.
- Add Chicken Stock and Seasonings: Slowly pour in the chicken stock while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Stir in the chicken base, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Season with salt and black pepper to taste, adjusting carefully as the chicken base contains salt.
- Simmer and Thicken: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently and scraping the sides and bottom of the pan to avoid sticking. Let it cook until the gravy has thickened to your desired consistency, about 5-7 minutes.
- Adjust Consistency: If the gravy is too thick, thin it gently with up to 1/2 cup additional chicken stock. Keep in mind it will thicken further as it cools.
- Add Cream (Optional) and Serve: Stir in the heavy cream if you prefer a creamier texture. Heat through and serve the gravy warm over your favorite dishes.
Notes
- No drippings required — this gravy uses chicken base and stock for convenience and flavor.
- Easy and quick recipe ideal for any meal that needs a comforting chicken-flavored gravy.
- Adjust seasoning carefully as chicken base adds saltiness.
- Heavy cream is optional but enriches the gravy for a silky finish.
- Best served immediately but can be gently reheated with extra stock if needed.
