Description

These chili dogs are the ultimate comfort food, featuring smoky sausages nestled in soft buns, topped with a hearty homemade chili sauce and gooey melted cheese. Perfect for a casual weekend meal or game day gathering.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Homemade Chili Powder:

  • 3 tsp smoked paprika
  • 3 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Chili Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 red capsicum/bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 500g/1 lb ground beef/beef mince
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 400g/14 oz canned crushed tomato
  • 2 beef cubes
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 3/4 tsp cooking/kosher salt

Chili Dogs:

  • 6 good smoked sausages (kransky, bratwurst, half-smoke) or hot dogs
  • 6 hot dog buns
  • 1/2 white onion, finely chopped
  • Yellow mustard
  • 2 cups Colby or Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
  • Plain crinkle cut potato chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chili Sauce: Sauté aromatics in oil, brown beef, add spices, tomato, water, beef cube, and salt. Slow cook for 3 hours. Thicken sauce as desired.
  2. Chili Dogs: Preheat oven, grill/pan-fry sausages, assemble with buns, mustard, onion, chili sauce, and cheese. Bake until cheese melts. Serve hot with optional potato chips.

Notes

  • Recipe makes enough chili sauce for 8 hot dogs.
  • Homemade chili powder adds depth of flavor.
  • Smoked sausages recommended over hot dogs for better taste.
  • Slow cooker option available but stovetop/oven cooking recommended for caramelization.
  • If sauce is too thin, simmer until thickened.
