Description

A comforting and creamy Cheesy Potato Bake featuring layers of thinly sliced potatoes, garlic-infused cream, and melted cheese, baked to golden perfection. This dish is perfect as a hearty side that pairs well with a variety of mains and offers a rich, satisfying flavor.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Potatoes

  • 1kg potatoes, peeled

Dairy

  • 100g cheese, grated (such as Colby or your favorite melting cheese)
  • 1.5 cups cream and/or milk (suggested half and half mix: 3/4 cup cream and 3/4 cup milk)

Flavorings

  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F) to ensure it is ready for baking the potato layers evenly.
  2. Slice Potatoes: Thinly slice the peeled potatoes to about 2-3mm thickness to allow them to cook thoroughly and absorb the creamy mixture.
  3. Prepare Cream Mixture: In a bowl, mix the cream and/or milk with the crushed garlic along with generous amounts of salt and pepper, ensuring the flavors meld well.
  4. Layering: In an ovenproof dish, place a thin layer of the sliced potatoes on the base. Sprinkle a portion of the grated cheese over the potatoes, then add dollops of the garlic cream mixture on top. Repeat these layers until all potatoes are used, finishing with a cheese layer on top.
  5. Bake: Bake the assembled dish in the preheated oven for about 80 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork and the top is golden and bubbling.

Notes

  • If preparing a gluten-free version, always verify labels on processed ingredients like cheese or cream to avoid hidden gluten.
  • You can adjust the cream and milk ratio depending on your preference for richness or healthiness; a half and half mix works well.
  • Use your favorite cheese variety; Colby cheese is recommended for its excellent melting qualities.
