Ingredients
Scale
Brownie Batter
- 1 box Brownie Mix
Cake Batter
- 1 box White Cake Mix
- Orange Food Coloring (as needed)
Frosting and Decorations
- 1 batch The Best Buttercream Frosting
- Halloween DIY Sprinkles
- 20 Cupcake Liners
Instructions
- Prepare Brownie Batter: Mix the brownie batter according to the directions on the brownie mix box until smooth and well combined.
- Prepare White Cake Batter: Mix the white cake batter following the cake mix instructions. Once mixed, add orange food coloring until the batter reaches your desired vibrant orange shade.
- Fill Cupcake Liners with Brownie Batter: Place cupcake liners in your baking pan. Spoon the brownie batter into each cupcake liner until it fills about 1/3 of the liner’s height. This ensures a rich brownie base without overpowering the cupcake.
- Add Cake Batter Over Brownie Layer: Carefully spoon the orange cake batter over the brownie batter in each liner, filling the cupcake liner up to about three-quarters full. This layering creates the signature brownie-cake combination.
- Bake the Cupcakes: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baking pan with the cupcake liners in the oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the cake layer; it should come out clean when done.
- Prepare Buttercream Frosting: While the cupcakes bake, make a batch of The Best Buttercream Frosting, whipping until smooth and creamy.
- Frost the Cupcakes: Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, generously spread or pipe the buttercream frosting on top of each cupcake.
- Decorate: Finish by sprinkling Halloween DIY sprinkles over the frosted cupcakes for a festive touch and extra crunch.
Notes
- Using a spoon to layer the brownie and cake batters gently prevents the two from mixing, maintaining distinct layers.
- Ensure cupcakes cool completely before frosting to prevent the buttercream from melting.
- You can customize the food coloring to suit any holiday or event, or skip coloring altogether for classic white cake layers.
- Make sure to bake only until a toothpick inserted in the cake layer comes out clean to avoid drying out the cupcakes.
- Store cupcakes in an airtight container for up to 3 days; refrigerate if your kitchen is warm due to buttercream.
