Description

These Black Cat Cupcakes are delightfully chocolatey treats perfect for any festive occasion, especially Halloween. Featuring moist chocolate cupcakes topped generously with rich chocolate cream cheese frosting, decorated with candy eyes, ears, and licorice whiskers to resemble cute black cats.

Ingredients

Scale

Cupcakes

  • 12 standard-size baked chocolate cupcakes

Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

  • ¾ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 (8-oz) package cream cheese (softened)
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 1 lb (4 cups) confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tbsp milk

Decorations

  • 24 small yellow gumdrops
  • Black licorice laces
  • 1 cup chocolate sprinkles
  • 24 chocolate Candy Melts

Instructions

  1. Prepare frosting bag: Fit a piping bag with a #4 plain tip and fill it with ¼ cup of the prepared chocolate cream cheese frosting. Set aside for later use to pipe noses on cupcakes.
  2. Create eyes: Slice off an 1/8-inch-thick piece from the larger end of each yellow gumdrop. Attach a small piece of black licorice lace onto the cut side of each gumdrop slice to resemble eyes.
  3. Make ears: Using a paring knife, carefully cut the chocolate Candy Melts into small triangle shapes to simulate cat ears.
  4. Prepare whiskers: Cut the black licorice laces into 1½- to 2-inch lengths to use as whiskers for the cupcakes.
  5. Frost cupcakes: Generously frost each chocolate cupcake with the chocolate cream cheese frosting, then coat the frosted surface with chocolate sprinkles to add texture and depth.
  6. Assemble cat faces: Insert the chocolate triangle ears into the frosting on each cupcake. Add the licorice whiskers around the sides, place the gumdrop eyes on top, and finish by piping a small frosting nose using the reserved piping bag.

Notes

  • Black Cat Cupcakes offer rich chocolate flavor throughout, from the cupcake base to the frosting.
  • They are easy and fun to decorate, perfect for Halloween or themed parties.
  • Use fresh, soft cream cheese and butter for a smooth frosting texture.
  • If you don’t have cookie tips, you can use a small zip-top bag with a tiny hole cut at the corner to pipe the frosting noses.
