Brownie Batter
- 2/3 cup butter or margarine
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
Add-ins and Garnishes
- 1 1/2 cups baking apple, peeled, seeded and chopped
- 1/2 cup nuts, chopped (optional garnish)
- Powdered sugar (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9” x 13” baking pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream together the butter or margarine with the brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, which helps create a tender texture.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract. Mix until all ingredients are well combined and the batter is smooth.
- Add Dry Ingredients: Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix gently until the batter is uniformly smooth without overmixing to keep brownies tender.
- Incorporate Apples and Nuts: Fold in the chopped baking apples and nuts using a spatula to evenly distribute and maintain the chunky texture.
- Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the top is lightly browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Garnish: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar and sprinkle additional chopped nuts if desired before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Be sure to use a baking apple like Granny Smith for the best flavor and texture contrast with the sweet batter.
- Chilling the batter briefly before baking can help develop a more even crumb, but is optional.
- Optionally substitute nuts with walnuts or pecans based on preference or omit for nut-free brownies.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
