Apple Fries
- 2 large Granny Smith apples
- 1 cup all purpose flour (130 grams)
- 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
- 3 large eggs
- 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar
- Cooking spray or oil spray
Dip
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons whole milk
Instructions
- Prepare the apples: Peel the apples. Using a sharp knife or fry cutter, slice the apples into thin strips. Set aside.
- Make flour mixture: In a small bowl, combine the flour with the apple pie spice and whisk well to blend the flavors.
- Whisk eggs: In a separate dish, whisk the eggs until smooth and consistent.
- Coat the apples: Working in small batches, toss the apple strips into the flour mixture, scoop them with a slotted spoon, shaking off excess flour. Dip the floured apple strips into the eggs, shake off excess egg, then dip back into the flour mixture to double coat. Shake off any extra flour to ensure crispiness.
- Arrange for air frying: Place coated apple fries on a wire rack lined with parchment paper to catch excess flour and keep them dry.
- Preheat air fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 325ºF (163ºC) to get it ready for cooking.
- Prepare air fryer basket: Spray the bottom of the air fryer basket generously with cooking spray or oil spray to prevent sticking.
- Air fry the apple fries: Place apple fries in the basket without overlapping. Spray the tops of the fries lightly with cooking oil. Cook for 5 minutes, then turn the fries, spray again, and cook for another 5 minutes until golden and crispy.
- Apply cinnamon sugar: Remove the fries immediately to a cooling rack or basket. While hot, sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar so it sticks well.
- Repeat batches: Cook any remaining apple fries in batches, tossing each batch with cinnamon sugar while still warm.
- Prepare the dip: Whisk together confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of milk in a small bowl, adding more milk as needed to reach desired consistency.
- Serve: Serve the apple fries immediately with the vanilla glaze dip on the side or drizzled on top for extra sweetness.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, substitute half the flour with cornstarch.
- Make sure to shake off excess flour before air frying to ensure the fries crisp up properly.
